The biggest percentage of dark chocolate ingredients is pure cocoa. Usually it make up about 60% of the total ingredients. Cocoa comes from cocoa plants which contain cocoa beans. And that is where chocolate that is dark comes from.

I always found it interesting that the chocolate comes from plants yet can still taste so good. But recently I was reading that raw cocoa beans are very bitter. So its in the processing where the chocolate gets its taste, when things such as sugar or syrup are added. On a similar note, one ingredient that this type of chocolate doesn’t contain is milk.
