Gout is easily to diagnose when it occurs in the most common place, which is the big toe joint of the foot. Typically gout occurs here in about 75% of cases of gout. It is more common in males over the age of 40. The big toe joint is typically red, hot and swollen and very painful. If the pain is mild, if several joints are affected, if it is not red, hot and swollen and if it is a female under the age of 40, then it is probably not gout. If the symptoms are not typical then other problems need to be considered.
