Hounds are a favorite hunting dogs breed choice among hunters. Their job is to spot and chase prey rather than point out prey for the hunter. Most people identify hounds with their sense of smell. Examples of breeds with this ability are the Basset Hound and Foxhound. They rely on their heightened sense of smell to locate game such as raccoon or fox. These scent hounds relentlessly follow their prey’s scent, often through wooded areas. Another choice is the sight hound. Sight hounds like the Irish wolfhound and the Greyhound are built for speed. Once they detect game with their sharp eyesight, they can keep up with swift prey such as rabbit and deer. Some hounds combine both abilities, such as the Rhodesian ridgeback, and can be used in either hunting scenario.
