Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy, also known as ETS, is a surgery performed to eliminate the cause of excessive sweating of the hands, feet, face, and armpits.  The surgery has a high success rate of curing excessive armpit sweat when it occurs with palmar, or hand sweating.  The cause of excessive sweating is over activity of the Sympathetic Nervous System which is located in the chest.  When ETS is performed, the nerves of the SNS are cut which curtails the over activity.  Clamping the nerves is the technique used when an ETS-C is done.  If a patient has had chest surgery or an infection of the chest, it can be more difficult to reach the SNS because of scar tissue.  For the most part the surgery causes little discomfort and the patient can go home within a few hours.  Normal activities can be resumed in a two to five days.
